9 days with African labyrinth safaris

Day 1 Nairobi
Arrive in Nairobi and make your way to the hotel. Attend a pre-departure group meeting with your tour leader scheduled for the evening.

Day 2 Naru Moru
Depart Nairobi at 8am and drive north through the farmlands of the Kikuyu people, eventually reaching Naro Moru in time for lunch. This village sits at the foot of Mount Kenya, Africa's second highest mountain (5199m). It is interesting to note that the Kikuyu people deified Mount Kenya and actually built all of their houses with doors facing the majestic peak. Enjoy optional activities during your free afternoon such as fishing, swimming, or learning the history of the nearby Mau Mau caves. (B L D)

Day 3-4 Samburu Game Reserve
After breakfast on Day 3, continue north to Samburu Game Reserve, arriving at the campsite in time for lunch. Samburu lies 325km north of Nairobi and harbours a number of wildlife species rarely found elsewhere. Enjoy afternoon game viewing in search of northern species of game not seen south of the equator, such as the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich. Another creature unique to these areas is the long-necked gerenuk (meaning 'giraffe neck'), a graceful antelope that stands upright on its hind legs to feed on tall bushes. Spend day 4 game viewing in the park. (2B 2L 2D)

Day 5 Lake Nakuru
Depart after an early breakfast and drive past the northern tip of the Aberdare Mountains, then descend into the Great Rift Valley where Lake Nakuru is located. Spend the afternoon game viewing in the park. (B L D)

Day 6-7 Masai Mara
After breakfast on Day 6, depart for the world famous Masai Mara Game Reserve. With its vast open plains and distinctive flat-topped acacia trees, no visit to Kenya would be complete without a visit here. With fantastic game viewing en route, arrive at Masai Mara in the late afternoon. Settle back to view game on day 7, as there is an excellent chance you may see some, or all, of the "Big 5" - lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino. (2B 2L 2D)

Day 8 Nairobi
Before breakfast, enjoy one last morning game drive. Return to the lodge for breakfast and then depart for the journey back to Nairobi. Arrive in Nairobi by approximately 17:00. Prepare to be dropped off at the hotel for your final night. Please note: This night is unaccompanied. (B L)

Day 9 Nairobi

This safari offers fantastic insight into the diverse nature and landscape of Kenya. With visits to the forested highlands, the semi-arid north, the Great Rift Valley and the savannah grasslands, this trip is an excellent all-encompassing introduction to East Africa. Virtually unlimited wildlife experiences and encounters with indigenous tribes make this a trip to remember.

CAMPING SAFARI IN EAST AFRICA:002

001:A Pack of Essential Gameparks - East Africa
A great lttle tour for those who want to see some of the best gameparks in East Africa at a good price and in a short period of time.

Price: GBP £360/PER PERSON

COOKING:
This trip has a local cook on board the truck. Two meals a day are included while on the truck. We normally have lunch out at local cafes on the way, lots of fun. Meals out and meals on Zanzibar (except breakfast on the Island ) are not included.

CAMPING:
We have made a short note of the campsites we use at the end of each day. Those that are more basic tend to be more scenic; that is especially in the game parks where basic toilets and cold showers are the norm. After a night at such camps we do our best to follow with a hot shower bar campsite. Although in the Serengeti followed by the Crater are two basic nights, but the wild beauty and the animals in the park more than makes up for this.

CHANGES:
You should be aware that things change frequently in Africa, camps open and close, as do the roads. So there is a chance that the itinerary may have to be changed due to unforeseen circumstances.

START & BEFORE THE TRIP:
We meet at the hotel at 9am on the first day of the trip. We recommend you arrive in Nairobi at least the day before, however if you’re there with a few days to spare there’s lots to see and do around the city. Close to the hotel is the National Museum, there are markets in and around Nairobi or you can venture further afield to Karen Blixen’s house, Langata Giraffe Centre or even Nairobi National Park for a first glimpse of African wildlife

NB: This camping trip is not suitable for Children

KENYA

Day 1:
We leave the capital of Kenya, Nairobi and descend into the Great Rift Valley, stopping at the lookouts with some amazing views at the bottom of the rift we pull into Fishermen’s Camp under the trees on the shore of Lake Naivasha.

The camp has a good bar restaurant overlooking the lake and good facilities.

Day 2:
Lake Naivasha is well known for its hippo population that comes ashore every night to graze. The camp is protected by a deep trench to stop the hippos coming too close. Close by is Hell’s Gate National Park where you can hire bikes to take you around the park and see the herds of zebra, buffalo, hartebeest and gazelle. There is some spectacular scenery here, red cliffs, grassy plains and rock towers made of hardened lava, the remains of ancient volcanoes. It’s a hard ride but well worth it, or you do want you can spend the day on the lake shore, spotting the rich variety of African birds. There are more species of birds on this one lake that there are in the whole of the UK.

Also on the lake is Elsamere, once the home of Joy Adamson and Elsa the lion of ‘Born Free’ fame. Elsamere is now the centre of the Born Free Foundation and you can find out more about their work, see the rare Colobus monkeys and take afternoon tea in the gardens.

Day 3:
Lake Nakuru National Park is only 60 kilometres across the valley floor. It has the largest herd of black rhino in East Africa, over a million pink flamingos (who are part time residents) and more than 400 other bird species. ‘Nakuru’ means ‘place of the waterbuck’ in Swahili and these antelope abound in the park as well as impala, buffalo and warthog. The lions here unusually often sit in the lower branches of trees.

The camp is a simple site in the south of the park, set beside a waterfall.

Day 4:
Kembu Camp. Leaving Lake Nakuru after a morning game drive and visiting Nakuru town, we spend the afternoon at this farm campsite giving you time to relax in the afternoon.

The camp has good facilities and a bar restaurant.

TANZANIA

Day 5:
We climb out of the Rift Valley, up to cool tea plantations before descending to camp on the shores of the largest lake in Africa - Lake Victoria. We enter Tanzania and spend the night either at Speke Camp or in a hotel in Tereme town.

The camp has good facilities and a bar restaurant or the hotel is some distance from any star.

Day 6:
Serengeti National Park must be one of Africa’s most famous and justifiably so. The sweeping plains evoke a picture of East Africa that most people hold in their minds and they are rarely disappointed when confronted with the real thing. We enter the park thru the western corridor, which starts near the lake and is on the migration rout of the wildebeest in September. We are likely to see zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, impala, buffalo, elephant and of course the big cats - lion, cheetah and if we’re lucky, leopard.

The camp is a simple site in the middle of the park, among the animals.

Day 7:
Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed, extinct volcano, thousands of years old and now supporting a wide range of animals. We take Land Rovers with a guide to the heart of the crater to see the game. It’s an excellent place for a game drive as in a small area there is a high concentration of animals, which are not afraid of vehicles.

The camp is a simple site set beautifully on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater, can be very cool at night. We normally pop into the nearby lodges also on the rim of the crater for a view and a drink.

Day 8:
Dropping down from the Crater we spend the night among the Mbulu people in the camp at the edge of Karatu town.

The camp has good facilities and a bar restaurant.

Day 9:
We re-cross the floor of the Rift Valley to Arusha, the northern capital of Tanzania, stopping in town to change money and have a break before heading out of town to the Lake Duluti, a small volcanic lake nestled in a forest reserve.

The camp has good facilities and a bar with simple restaurant on the lake.

Day 10
Transit back to Nairobi by the local shuttle or travel on to climb Kilimanjaro.

A local payment of GBP£170 is payable to the driver on Day 1

I T I N E R A R Y

This trip operates in both directions

DAY 1: Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar
A ferry from Dar es Salaam takes us to the "Spice Island", where we will spend three nights on this legendary island. Zanzibar is steeped in history and was one of the major starting points for most East African explorers in their quest for new lands.

Please note: From our experience our clients have felt the need to explore the island on their own, therefore accommodation and food is for client’s own account whilst on Zanzibar, but our trip leader accompany clients to the island and will be able to book accommodation and tours on the island

DAY 2 & 3: Zanzibar
History aside, Zanzibar offers a wealth of experiences for the visitor. Today the quiet streets of the old Stone Town still retain their Arabic influence, from the Medina-like shops to the palaces of the Sultans, who founded their vast empires on the spoils of the slave and ivory trade. The island is still famous for its spices, and tours around a spice plantation can be organised. Other options include a trip to the nearby Prison Island with its giant tortoises, and beautiful beaches to enjoy. Or perhaps you would enjoy the opportunity to hire a motorbike and explore the more remote areas of the island.

Zanzibar is a seafood lover’s paradise. Numerous restaurants offer a great variety of the freshest catch from the ocean - giant lobsters being a popular speciality. Alternatively, joining the locals for dinner in the waterfront market is an experience not to be missed. The market stalls offer an unusual selection of fast food African style at a very reasonable cost.

DAY 4: Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam
Leaving Zanzibar we take the ferry back to mainland for an overnight in Dar es Salaam. (D)

DAY 5: Dar es Salaam to Arusha
From Dar es Salaam we travel through the countryside with its vast sisal plantations to Arusha. On the way we pass the Pare and Usambara Mountain ranges before driving through the town of Moshi, the base for Mt. Kilimanjaro climbing expeditions, and weather permitting, we may catch a glimpse of this magical mountain. (B,L,D)

DAY 6: Arusha to Serengeti National Park (optional Excursion)
Arusha is a pleasant town situated at the base of Mount Meru and is the starting point for the optional excursions to Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti. We conduct these excursions in locally operated 4WD vehicles, which are adapted for safari use. Depending on which option you choose, you will be away from the Arusha campsite for either one or two nights.

If you take up the two-night/three day option you will depart Arusha in the morning with your vehicles and guides. The drive to the Serengeti National Park takes us through the Masai town of Mtu Wa Mbu (Mosquito River) and up into the Ngorongoro Reserve for a glimpse of the Ngorongoro Crater before descending down onto the plains of the Serengeti. The abundance of plains game in this area is truly astounding. The afternoon will be spent game viewing before setting up camp in the midst of the national park. With some luck we will be able to listen to the nighttime noises of the wildlife! (B,L,D)

DAY 7: Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Crater
After a full morning game drive in the Serengeti we will return to pull down camp and head back towards the Ngorongoro. Enroute we will have the option of a visit to Olduvai Gorge, known as the cradle of civilisation (time permitting), or a visit to a Masai village to learn a little more about these unique and intriguing people. From here we travel up to Ngorongoro craters edge for our campsite for the evening.

For those taking the one-night/two day option you will be collected from Arusha in the afternoon and transferred to the town of Karatu for the evening. (B,L,D)

DAY 8: Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha
Ngorongoro Crater with its 600 metre walls and 20-kilometre width is a natural wonder, and offers a spectacular view from the rim. The true size of this caldera is only appreciated from the floor itself and the abundance of its animal inhabitants becomes apparent. It is home to nearly every species of African animal and offers a chance to view an incredible concentration of East African mammals, such as elephant, rhino, buffalo, hippo, lion, and plain’s game. After spending the full morning in the crater you will return to the campsite near Arusha for another night. Both optional excursions will follow the same schedule today. (B,L,D)

DAY 9: Arusha to Namanga
After a leisurely morning start and the chance to explore the snake exhibits at our campsite in Arusha we will take some time in Arusha for our last Tanzanian stop. Explore the craft markets in town or stop at the bakery for a local coffee. Lunch will be just outside town as we head the last 120kms north to the Tanzania / Kenya border town of Namanga. After competing formalities we will camp at Namanga on the Kenyan side of the border. (B,L,D)

DAY 10: Namanga to Nairobi
This morning we travel the final 180kms north to the capital city, Nairobi, arriving in the morning. On arrival in Nairobi, the truck will proceed to the Boulevard Hotel to allow passengers to disembark there, and will then drive to our campsite to overnight. (B)

DAY 11: Nairobi to Masai Mara game Reserve
We will depart from the Boulevard Hotel and leave the hustle and bustle of Nairobi and climb the escarpment to our first viewpoint stop over looking the Great African Rift Valley. Descending into the Rift valley we enter Masai land, and these habitual pastoralists are seen quite regularly on the side of the road as they tend their cattle. We will arrive at our campsite – Acacia Camp - early evening in time to enjoy sunset on the Masai Mara. (L, D)

DAY 12: Masai Mara
Game drives through the Mara find us looking for the infamous big 5 as well as giving us the opportunity to see this ‘ garden of Eden’ in a state nature intended it to be, huge plains, rolling hills and an abundance of game matched no where else on earth. Elephant, lion, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck just to name a few of the animal that inhabit this wonderland. Sitting around a campfire and watching the sunset is the perfect way to finish a day’s game viewing in the Mara. (B, L, D)

DAY 13: Masai Mara to Nakuru
Departing the Masai Mara early we will pass through the third largest town in Kenya, Nakuru, where we will stop for the night to re supply and shop. (B, L, D)

DAY 14: Nakuru to Kampala
Today, we cross the border into Uganda and travel via the lakeside town of Jinja (the Source of the Nile) before reaching Kampala, Uganda's capital, for an overnight stay. Uganda is a small country of striking physical beauty. Its landscapes vary from the fertile green areas around the northern shores of Lake Victoria to the snow-covered Ruwenzori Mountains in the west and the semi-desert parts of the north facing the border of Sudan.

The political instability that haunted Uganda over a period of years has had the positive effect of leaving the country free of the over-commercialism so common in other parts of Africa. The current administration under President Museveni has devoted considerable effort and funds to regain Uganda's former glory as one of Africa's most prosperous and, from a tourist’s point of view, one of the most appealing and interesting countries to visit. (B, L, D)

DAYS 15 & 16: Kampala to Kisoro
After an early morning departure from Kampala we drive further west on into the depths of Uganda and arrive at our base in Kisoro. (B, L, D)

From our Kisoro base, depending on where the gorilla permits are available, and where the gorillas are located, we will be viewing them in either the Magahinga or Bwindi National Parks in Uganda, the Virunga National Park in the DRC or at Ruhengeri in Rwanda. Due to the nature of the gorillas and their habits, viewing cannot be guaranteed. The gorillas themselves can tend to move around the locality quite a distance and the trek can be quite arduous. The cost to trek the gorillas differs from park to park and can range from US$300 to US$375, per 1-hour viewing. There is also a cost for the local transport to take you to & from the starting point to trek the gorillas. This cost is normally US$15 to US$20 per person. Please note that we are not in control of the price of gorilla permits and therefore cannot be held responsible for any increases in fees levied by the relevant authorities. National parks usually allow clients who fail to see the gorillas, a second chance to re-trek the next day if time and availability allows or they may refund your trekking fee. This is purely at their discretion. Although this is the general situation, the respective National Parks authorities will not put this in writing to any tour operator. Again the respective park authorities say that you are paying to trek the gorillas, not view them. We are considered to be the main tour operator within the overland industry and we have a very high success rate of getting in and actually seeing these magnificent animals.

Please note: This is an optional excursion and visas to the DRC and Rwanda can be obtained at the border.

The mountain gorilla (Gorilla Gorilla Berengei) of whom only about 600 still exist, is one of our closest living relatives, yet ironically, it is mankind that poses the greatest threat to its survival. To visit these noble creatures in there own environment is an experience you will never forget. Accompanied by a park guide and a bush cutter, we track these gorillas through the rain forest. The gorilla families have been habituated to tourists and their whereabouts are monitored daily by the guides and park officials.

It may be necessary to trek for quite a while through the dense forest vegetation (up to 5 hrs) in order to reach the family designated for your visit.
As gorillas are sensitive to human diseases, the park authorities will not allow anyone they consider to be in poor health to visit the gorilla groups and children under 15 years of age are not allowed to visit.

You need not feel that you are exploiting these animals - for years they have been ruthlessly hunted for their hands and heads, which have been sold as souvenir ashtrays and lampshades. In addition, large numbers have been killed whilst trying to stop poachers stealing babies for sale to zoos, where they have never lived long. As a result, the ever-growing number of tourists to see them is an important factor in their survival. The gorilla fees help to set up and finance patrols that are instrumental in protecting the gorillas from poachers and their lethal snares.

DAY 17: Kisoro to Lake Bunyoni
A short drive through arguably some of the most picturesque scenery in Africa brings us to lake Bunyoni. Lake Bunyoni is the deepest Crater Lake in Africa and is home to a large number of bird and fish species as well as otters. (B, L, D)

DAY 18: Lake Bunyoni
Today we have the whole day at leisure to enjoy the beauty of Lake Bunyoni. There is the option to swim, visit the local villages or just sit back, relax and enjoy the tranquil surrounds. A well deserved rest day! (B, L, D)

DAY 19: Lake Bunyoni to Kampala
After enjoying the peaceful surrounds of Lake Bunyoni we drive to Kampala for another overnight stay, and perhaps the chance to sample the nightlife. Today we will cross the equator for the second time and there will be ample opportunity for photos at the Equator crossing. (B, L, D)

DAY 20: Kampala to Jinja
Today we have the option to either white water raft the Nile or visit Ngamba Chimpanzee Sanctuary. For the adventurous, you will be collected from Kampala and transferred to Jinja where you will experience some of the best white water rafting in Africa. For the less adventurous, you will have the morning at leisure or the option to take a full day excursion to visit Ngamba Chimp Sanctuary before our departure to Jinja.
Our overnight camp is right on the edge of the Nile River where there is an abundance of resident bird life & some truly amazing photo opportunities from right outside your tent! (B, L, D)

DAY 21: Jinja to Nakuru
Today will be a full day driving back towards Kenya, we will cross the border before lunch and stop for supplies en route. Tonight we will overnight again in Nakuru. (B,L,D)

DAY 22: Lake Nakuru National Park

DAY 1: Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar
A ferry from Dar es Salaam takes us to the "Spice Island", where we will spend three nights on this legendary island. Zanzibar is steeped in history and was one of the major starting points for most East African explorers in their quest for new lands.

Please note:
From our experience our clients have felt the need to explore the island on their own, therefore accommodation and food is for client’s own account whilst on Zanzibar, but our trip leader accompany clients to the island and will be able to book accommodation and tours on the island

It is home to nearly every species of African animal and offers a chance to view an incredible concentration of East African mammals, such as elephant, rhino, buffalo, hippo, lion, and plain’s game. I T I N E R A R Y

(This trip operates in both directions)

DAY 01: Nairobi to Masai Mara game Reserve
We will depart from the Boulevard Hotel and leave the hustle and bustle of Nairobi and climb the escarpment to our first viewpoint stop over looking the Great African Rift Valley. Descending into the Rift valley we enter Masai land, and these habitual pastoralists are seen quite regularly on the side of the road as they tend their cattle. We will arrive at our campsite – Acacia Camp - early evening in time to enjoy sunset on the Masai Mara. (L, D)

DAY 02: Masai Mara
Game drives through the Mara find us looking for the infamous big 5 as well as giving us the opportunity to see this ‘ garden of Eden’ in a state nature intended it to be, huge plains, rolling hills and an abundance of game matched no where else on earth. Elephant, lion, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck just to name a few of the animal that inhabit this wonderland. Sitting around a campfire and watching the sunset is the perfect way to finish a day’s game viewing in the Mara. (B, L, D)

DAY 03: Masai Mara to Nakuru
Departing the Masai Mara early we will pass through the third largest town in Kenya, Nakuru, where we will stop for the night to re supply and shop. (B, L, D)

DAY 04: Nakuru to Kampala

DAYS 05 & 06: Kampala to Kisoro

There is usually a park entry fee as well of approx US$15.

DAY 07: Kisoro to Lake Bunyoni
A short drive through arguably some of the most picturesque scenery in Africa brings us to lake Bunyoni. Lake Bunyoni is the deepest crater lake in Africa and is home to a large number of bird and fish species as well as otters. (B, L, D)

Today, we cross the border into Uganda and travel via the lakeside town of Jinja (the Source of the Nile) before reaching Kampala, Uganda\'s capital, for an overnight stay.

The current administration under President Museveni has devoted considerable effort and funds to regain Uganda\'s former glory as one of Africa\'s most prosperous and, from a tourist’s point of view, one of the most appealing and interesting countries to visit. (B, L, D)

DAYS 05 & 06: Kampala to Kisoro

There is usually a park entry fee as well of approx US$15. There is also a cost for the local transport to take you to & from the starting point to trek the gorillas. This cost is normally US$10 to US$15 per person.

DAY 08: Lake Bunyoni
Today we have the whole day at leisure to enjoy the beauty of Lake Bunyoni. There is the option to swim, visit the local villages or just sit back, relax and enjoy the tranquil surrounds. A well deserved rest day! (B, L, D)

DAY 09: Lake Bunyoni to Kampala

Moving further east, we drive to Lake Naivasha where we make camp in peaceful surroundings beside the lake. The highest of the Rift Valley lakes, Naivasha lies at about 1880m again the lake is home to a multitude of bird life, pride of place must go to the African Fish Eagle. The afternoon is spent at leisure here and you have the opportunity (time permitting) to enjoy some optional excursions, such as a boat ride to the Crescent Island Game Sanctuary, Hell\'s Gate National Park or Elsamere, the retirement home of Joy Adamson (\"Born Free\"). (B,L,D)

DAY 07: Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar

Please note: Our crew can organise accommodation for you whilst on Zanzibar, although from our experience our clients have felt the need to explore the island on their own. Therefore accommodation and food is for client’s own account whist on Zanzibar.

DAYS 08 & 09: Zanzibar

DAY 10: Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam

009:Gameparks and Gorillas

21 Day overland tour encompassing some of the best wildlife viewing in Eastern Africa. Local payment of GBP£200

Price: GBP £380 /person
ITINERARY
We meet at the hotel at 9am on the first day of the trip. We recommend you arrive in Nairobi at least the day before, however if you're there with a few days to spare there's lots to see and do around the city. Close to the hotel is the National Museum, there are markets in and around Nairobi or you can venture further afield to Karen Blixen's house, Langata Giraffe Centre or even Nairobi National Park for a first glimpse of African wildlife.

WEEK ONE
Leaving Nairobi we descend into the Great Rift Valley and stop for a couple of nights at Lake Naivasha, well known for its hippo population that come ashore every night to graze. Close by is Hell's Gate National Park where you can hire bikes to take you around the park and see the herds of zebra, buffalo and antelope. There is some spectacular scenery here, red cliffs, grassy plains and rock towers made of hardened lava, the remains of ancient volcanoes. Also on the lake is Elsamere, once the home of Joy Adamson and Elsa the lion of 'Born Free' fame. Elsamere is now the centre of the Born Free Foundation and you can find out more about their work, see the rare colobus monkeys and take afternoon tea in the gardens.

We travel west out of the rift valley towards Uganda . Before leaving Kenya we stop at the town of Kisumu on Lake Victoria . In its heyday it was a bustling port, nowadays Kisumu is much quieter and a pleasant, laid back town to visit.

Travelling past Lake Victoria , we enter Uganda . Jinja is at the source of the River Nile and we can watch it begin its 4000 mile journey north from Lake Victoria through the Owen Falls Dam. Further upriver at Bujagali Falls you can go whitewater rafting on the White Nile 's tumultuous rapids or, if you're after a more relaxing time, just sit back and watch the local fishermen glide by in their dug-out canoes.

WEEK TWO
Passing through Uganda 's capital, Kampala , we head to the west of the country. This hilly region is characterised by terraced fields on steep slopes and we drive slowly up and downhill along the winding gravel roads. As the landscape changes from agriculture to forest, we reach the habitat of the mountain gorilla on the edge of the Ruwenzori Mountains .

In groups of 6 to 8 people with two guides we trek deep into the forest to find one of the gorilla families. The trek is an experience in itself, following your guides as they cut a path through the thick vegetation. The guides track the gorillas almost every day but even so, sometimes it can take several hours to find them. You will be rewarded though by the sight of these human-like giants playing with their young, feeding, grooming and staring curiously back at you. We spend an hour observing these amazing animals - remember to bring plenty of camera film.

As the groups going to the gorillas are small, it takes a couple of days for everyone to do the trek. Whilst others are searching for the great apes, you can take walks around the surrounding countryside or just chill out with a beer and a book. Leaving the slopes of the Ruwenzoris behind, we return to the farmers and their fields. We stop at Lake Bunyoni where local men in their dug-out canoes glide out of the morning mists.

WEEK THREE
Kampala is a lively city with plenty of places to eat out or have a beer and the open-air nightclubs are an experience not to be missed.

Back in Kenya we stop at Kembu Camp; a working farm in the old settlers area of Kenya From the camp we visit Lake Nakuru National Park which has the largest herd of black rhino in East Africa , over a million pink flamingos and more than 400 other bird species. 'Nakuru' means 'place of the waterbuck' in Swahili and these antelope abound in the park as well as impala, buffalo and warthog.

We spend two days visiting the Masai Mara Game Park , camping on the edge of the park with frequent forays into the park to spot the wealth of wildlife in this Eden on the plains. The sweeping plains evoke a picture of East Africa that most people hold in their minds and they are rarely disappointed when confronted with the real thing. We are likely to see amongst others, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, impala, buffalo, elephant and of course the big cats - lion, cheetah and if we're lucky, leopard

En route back to Nairobi we stop at lookouts with some amazing views over the Great Rift Valley.

Optional extras:
Gorilla Trek £200;
Whitewater rafting £60;
Hell's Gate and bike hire £20.
All prices are approximate and may change due to currency fluctuations.
Further options available in dossier.

This is a pleasant town situated at the base of Mount Meru and is the starting point for your optional excursion to Ngorongoro Crater and/or Serengeti. We conduct these excursions in locally operated Land Rovers, which are specially adapted for safari use. Depending on which option you choose, you will be away from the Arusha campsite for either one or two nights. (L, D)

DAY 02: Serengeti (Optional) If you take up the two-night/three day option you will depart Arusha in the morning with your vehicles and guides. (B, L, D)

DAY 03: Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Crater After a full morning game drive in the Serengeti we will return to pull down camp and head back towards the Ngorongoro. Here we travel up to Ngorongoro Crater’s edge for our campsite for the evening. We suggest you pack your winter woollies as it can get very cold on the rim of the crater during night times. For those taking the one-night/two day option you will be collected from Arusha today in the afternoon and transferred to the town of Karatu for the evening. Tomorrow we will join the rest of the group for your Ngorongoro game drive. (B, L, D)

DAY 04: Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha This morning we descend into the Ngorongoro Crater with its 600 metre walls and 20-kilometre width is a natural wonder, and offers a spectacular view from the rim. (B, L, D)

DAY 05 Arusha to Pangani We leave Arusha and head towards the warm Indian Ocean. Travelling through the town of Moshi we cross the southern slopes of the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro. There is also an opportunity to view the snowy summit, weather dependant. This calls for a photo stop! Continuing south we pass the Usambara Mountains where we encounter vast sisal plantations on our way to Dar es Salaam. (B, L, D)

DAY 06: Pangani to Dar es Salaam Today is another long days drive through beautiful lush scenery and palm trees. We sent up camp for the night. On arrival in Dar es Salaam, we spend the night at a beach hotel/campsite that is situated to the north of the city, and prepare for our departure to Zanzibar the next morning. (B, L, D)

DAY 07: Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar A ferry from Dar es Salaam takes us to the "Spice Island", where we will spend three nights on this legendary island. Zanzibar is steeped in history and was one of the major starting points for most East African explorers in their quest for new lands. (B)
Please note: From our experience our clients have felt the need to explore the island on their own, therefore accommodation and food is for client’s own account whilst on Zanzibar, but our trip leader accompany clients to the island and will be able to book accommodation and tours on the island

DAYS 08 & 09: Zanzibar History aside, Zanzibar offers a wealth of experiences for the visitor.

DAY 10: Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam Leaving Zanzibar, we take the ferry back to the mainland and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania\'s first city with its colonial buildings and palm-lined port, where we end our safari.
